According to ChatGPT making $1 an hour in 1960 is equivalent to making $96 an hour today.

They made the average new house size balloon from 900 square feet to 2600 square feet. Then they decreed that these large homes are the only form of development allowed to be built. Real estate has always been a speculative racket in America.

but inflation calculators are busted due to the boskin commission changing how inflation was defined in the 90s.

the trick is they are then adding housing cost inflation on top of that. the problem is that the year chosen - 1960 - is at the end of a decade-long housing construction boom which is why the prices were as low as they were.

it's simpler to say that a person needs to make $200k/year in the united states now to have the quality of life of a middle-class family in 1960.

It's more like $25 / hour. A Boomer that I rang up at work told his son that back in the late 50's, candy bars were 5 or 10 cents each. Now they are like $1.90 - $2.80 and they are smaller. Minimum wage in 1960 was $1 / hour.
