I'd say it was a direct result of the mainstream media coming down on gamers after gamergate. Basically a bunch of weaponized SJW's started coming down hard on gaming, infiltrated every aspect of video game development and started shitting out the drole propaganda we see today. Any complaint as to the quality of a video game can now be recontextualized as indefensible because it's sexist, racist or homophobic, so we're going to keep getting low quality games that are applauded as the Citizen Kane of Gaming until those dopes find a new cause to be perpetually upset about.
