It's a war of attrition and arty and drones make massed maneuver warfare from WW2 or Desert Storm unviable. Ukraine was also flooded with weapons and financial help from entire NATO so Russia is not really fighting *only* what Ukraine has.

Regardless of all that, the Russians are still effectively grinding the Ukrainians down. But people continue to imagine these big arrow offensives and so on.
In fact, after the war settled post 2022 and Ukraine regained some territory after the initial Russian regime-change attempted blitz, Ukraine did try big arrow offensives.
They did the spring 2023 offensive in the Orikhiv-Robotyne directions and also in other areas.
And in 2024 they did Kursk, but these eventually were obliterated with very heavy casualties on the Ukrainian side.

So big, massed maneuvers don't work in this new type of warfare with nations that have some weapons and frontline parity.
But Russia will grind this down. Eventually for Ukraine it will probably be a Germany in 1918 type of front collapse from troop and materiel depletion and constant Russian pressure.

The BBC estimated only ~200k Russian fatalities as of June 2025, so it's very impressive that Russia was able to cover up the rest of them. Compare with Ukraine, who are so forward thinking that they're building cemetaries to accomodate over a million dead despite having lost only 8,000 men this year.

It's a battle for the control over Ukraine between Europe/US and RU. EU/US successfully overthrew the regime that was loyal to RU in 2014. Then RU was coping for 10 years, trying to suggest a gov of national unity to the EU/US etc and then later realized this would get them nowhere.

I have never seen evidence of this. 1:1 was almost certainly happening at the beginning of the war, but the Russian losses were Chechen mercenaries and Wagner penal batallions. The current situation is absolutely in Russia's favor, and that's why Ukraine is increasing cemetary capacity by over 1 Million while the BBC estimates that Russia has ~170-250k fatalities as of June this year. Once Ukraine decided to not rotate units out, give no-step-back orders, launch offensives through minefields, scrap all field hospitals, their casualties started soaring.
