First Collective Shout, then the p*rn bans, and now this.
All they have to do is get a handful of representatives to sign a few papers every few years and eventually it will get through.
On the other hand, we have to organize large-scale protests and riots that may or may not change something.

The asymmetry is exhausting.

I am getting tired. They're winning through attrition.

If enough people learned how to bypass it, that method of bypassing it would be struck down next, anyway.

This isn't about left or right anymore. Both are in on it. Corps are pushing this from all sides, since it's a big win for them. The entire UK bill was funded, created and politicians got bought to push it through. People have already started following the money and it all came back to the funds (with no oversight) tied to big tech. No western country is safe from this.
Current governments in power now help it push through because it also helps their agenda, especially in the EU. They can just label anyone that says bad thing about migration as a domestic terrorist at this point. It's all about mass surveillance and controlling the flow of information. For corps it's about expanding ad revenue even more (with ID verification they can literally start throwing "you've been pre approved for x credit card or buy now pay later" schemes.
ID verification also means smaller, niche sites won't be able to keep going. Only corpo backed sites can pay for the infrastructure while many places on the internet will die off, even more than it has up to today. Total corpo sanitization and control.

I think it'll be because "Russians(or insert some other country here) bots are flooding social media, we need to do something!!" and that something will be digital ID + blocking traffic from other countries so that narratives don't go questioned. Things have gotten too free, it's basically impossible to set a narrative now without major pushback(see: Covid, Epstein, etc).

AI will give intelligence agencies the power to make the most convincing narratives ever, they don't want some Vietnamese guy living in his parents basement to be able to analyze the video and find out it's fake. If John Smith does it instead, they can just arrest him until no one is left to contest their claims.

To sum it up new year, same rights grabbing, and always it gets shut down and another year rolls around.
Here's an piece from 2023 showing how they really want to end encryption:
https://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/blog/2023/06/eu-member-states-still-cannot-agree-about-end-end-encryption/
This comes up constantly. Governments HATE encryption with a passion because it means their law enforcement has to actually try to get rid of their political enemies. The want complete control but still (well at least the ones who actually try) have to pretend they care about "human rights".
You can scapegoat it by saying it's someone like Yeev.ah john.ahnayshon's fault, and she is loud and aggressive about it but she's also really stupid which is an advantage of having her around.

So for now EU and someparts of Switzerland are the go to places for privacy. Everywhere else is different shades of dystopia.

The EU system was made to make participation of administrative outsiders as difficult as possible ("ehrm... no goy you need AT LEAST a MILLION signatures for us to even look at your suggestion") and give as much agency to the insiders as possible ("Here are a couple directives, decided by yours truly, an unelected commission").

The name is misleading.

This law gives the EU the right to force Microsoft and any other company to put actual trojans into their software and also force them to hijack updating processes. So they might say "hey this dude might be sus" and the police can press a button and specifically you will receive an instant update from Windows that will install itself, which contains a trojan. They can already do this with routers, look up the TR-069 protocol.

The EU is pushing a "Chat Control" law to scan all private digital messages, including on encrypted apps like Signal and WhatsApp. The official reason is to fight child abuse (CSAM), but critics call it mass surveillance.

The plan is to use "client-side scanning," which means software on your own device would scan your texts, photos, and links BEFORE they get encrypted and sent. If an algorithm flags your content, it gets reported to a new EU agency and law enforcement.

This effectively breaks end-to-end encryption, creating a backdoor that governments and hackers could exploit. Security experts say this weakens security for everyone. The AI used for scanning has high error rates (up to 80% false positives), meaning innocent people will constantly be investigated. The plan also includes mandatory age verification, which would kill online anonymity.

The EU Parliament opposes this and wants targeted, judge-approved surveillance only. However, the EU Council, representing the 27 member state governments, is close to approving it. As many as 19 countries, including France which recently flipped its position, are now in favor. Germany's vote is now the crucial decider.

This is a massive threat to privacy. They are using "protecting children" as an excuse to read everyone's private communications. A key vote that could make this happen is expected soon.
