Item worth 100$ is imported into the US.

Tariff is 100%

The importer needs to pay$ 100 on it. This 100$ goes into the pocket of the govt.

The importer pays 2x the price for the same item.

NY Post-The Department of Veterans Affairs revealed it is scrapping collective bargaining agreements for most of its unions in a bid to keep employees focused on their performance.

“Too often, unions that represent VA employees fight against the best interests of Veterans while protecting and rewarding bad workers,” VA Secretary Doug Collins said in a statement.

“We’re making sure VA resources and employees are singularly focused on the job we were sent here to do: providing top-notch care and service to those who wore the uniform.”

Last year, the VA had some 1,900 bargaining-unit employees who spent about 750,000 hours of their taxpayer-funded work time on union-related activities.

Termination of those union contracts for most units comes in response to President Trump’s executive order in March that moved to prohibit certain federal agencies from labor relations programs.

Back in 2016, the VA spent more than any other federal agency on taxpayer-funded union time — $49 million, according to US Office of Personnel Management data.--

Like public schools huh. Schools are union shops kids must attend by law to keep the union members employed to keep the union going. Why 69% of US students can't read at grade level. Union members would actually have to work in order to educate children. They are there strictly for the union, union pay, benefits and protections. Bust these evil public service unions and ban them forever.

in what time frame? you'd have to build supply lines from scratch, which would at least take 20 years, if we're being very nice, because in the last 8 years muttmerica has managed to create -5% of the supply lines they'd need, and of course you'd be giving free reign to china to do whatever they want while you're spending decades trying to build iron ore mines
but let's say that you got a magic wand from the sky jew and conjured supply lines and factories out of nothing tomorrow, then what? either wages will have to increase and product prices will increase, which means that nobody on earth will buy them, you'll just be locked behind an iron curtain with an isolated low production economy, or the dollar will get devalued to such a level that it's basically monopoly money and everyone will just start fleeing the country

That's the thing though; the tariffs only get you half way to manufacturing coming back, if they aren't paired with government initiatives/funding to help people start new businesses then it's not going to work. And I don't see any anything but tariffs.

People do understand that the United States is not dollar limited, right?

They make dollars -- they don't need to scavenge them from somewhere else. There are plenty of reasons, very good reasons, you would want a tariff regime to counter some of the effects of reserve currency status (the "Triffin dilemma"), but revenue is not one of them.

The goal of this is Trump wants production to move to the USA right? But he's deporting all the immigrants which I assume vacates a lot of jobs already. Currently there is roughly just 7.015million Americans unemployed and 4.35million classified as of working age but too disabled to work. So will less that 3 million people be able to cover the production needs that Trump is attempting to create with the tariffs? Doesn't seem to add up to me

What happens when the restriction in the supply of dollars through trade deficits leads to a global liquiditiy crisis? I.E. Brent Johnson's "Dollar Milkshake Theory" dollar blow off top.
This is why BRICs is being established, as an offramp to a USD global shortage. Also a blow off top isn't healthy, as that's a hallmark of a steep downturn or a prolonged crisis for the mainstreet economy here at home.

The only way to pay down the debt is some form of austerity, which Republicans will never do because they only know spending more and cutting taxes. Which means hitting social security, medicare and medicaid, and the DoD

there's no point in producing a good domestically that can be made cheaper abroad
you won't be able to export it anywhere and your own citizens, forced to buy it instead of the alternatives, will have less money to make other purchases, contracting the economy
domestic production is only valuable if you're exporting the product and bringing foreign money in
that's how america got rich after ww2 and it's how china got rich
otherwise you get a shit-tier north korean economy

That's one the most pernicious things. A lot of the companies that got hit the hardest because the tariffs were calculated on the basis of trade imbalances - which means that sources of cheap raw materials got hit the hardest, which only makes manufacturing more expensive. Tariffs that your competitors don't have to pay.

I want to say that, for example, the spicy sand you need to make chips is sourced from Indonesia. Indonesia isn't buying a ton of GM Trucks and GPUs to offset the exports of raw materials like spicy sand, like wood, etc. And guess who doesn't have to pay exorbitant tariffs? The Korean furniture and instrument makers, Taiwan, and so on.

That's not quite right. 2 days ago I took a barstool next to a power couple that owned and operated a metal fabricating place. They had a couple lasers (for cutting up sheet sheel into parts), some presses (iirc), robotic welding, etc. standard company. 35 employees. They reported that they were totally slammed since January or so.

A company like that can grow, or it can spin off part of its operations, or it can create a satellite plant closer to its big customers. Growth doesn't have to be green field.

In the conventional/Keynesian use of austerity, yes - cutting government spending would drop support of the economy. What is going on under Trump is something different, with the same hazards wrt recession, but not the same guaranteed outcome. Trump is discouraging consumption of imported consumer goods, but massively driving industrial investment. 'Austerity' is only in one place in the economy. Really the 'austerity' he is driving is helping prevent a massive wave of inflation due to the other investment.

Interest rate tweaks on top of this will help walk the line between inflation/deflation.

It's important to understand how things work.
Because we're the world reserve currency and most other countries use our dollarydoos for trade we print vast amounts of money to steal a little bit of value out of their economies. Then we spread this money to our own economy with wildly inefficient government programs like gibs programs, the industrial military complex, corruption and regular contracts.
The tariffs and taxes feed into this economic loop and perpetuate the cycle. Thus handing money to the government will eventually hand it back to us.
The lazy dumbasses going on about trickle down economics only ever managed to tap into the bottom of the barrel gibs programs and should be shunned for being knuckle dragging retards. They are poor of mind and deserve to be treated like shit.

Yes, but I really don't understand how it will work?
-Complex manufacturing requires many materials and machines, and it's not possible to have everything domestically. So tariffs will impact your initial cost and make your manufacturing less competitive on the international level.

-You will artificial compete on a "easier" domestic market. Your manufacturing will be less competitive than international one. So, you will increase US share in domestic market, but decrease it on international market.

In fine, will weaken the US manufacturing.
Where am I wrong?

Shifting focus of what it costs to buy overseas shit. As if 1920’s America was maoism, as if the Monroe doctrine was Maoism.

I really do not understand why people think him not chokeslamming the dollar by applying tariffs is all he can do at this point. He’s intentionally devaluing the dollar to keep the fed from regaining control over it, and he’s trying to get the fed to admit that we’re in a stagnated depression so he can advise them to hyperinflate the dollar.

Pretty obvious at this point what he’s doing. When the dollar dies, immigrants will stop coming to America, and will begin to leave enmasse if they can. They’ll be deported enmasse if not. Suddenly the US doesn’t have bases all over the planet.

Funny how that happens. It’s almost like Trump is infact an isolationist and will even allow you to smear what he’s doing with maoism if it means that the left cannot argue against it. Disarming their ability to shadow genocide the US.

Interesting.

>but its not YOU paying it, its the person selling it.
the importer is responsible for actually paying the tariff

1. the importer could negotiate lower prices with the exporter to make up for the tariff. this doesn't always happen
2. the importer can eat the tariff out of their profit margin. this rarely happens.
3. the importer can pass on the tariff to the consumer by raising prices. this usually happens

econ studies have shown that a majority (but not all) of the burden of a tariff is passed on to the end consumer but the total burden is borne by all parties to the transaction in varying degrees. the exact outcome is highly specific to each individual import/export agreement. but on average, the consumer has been shown to get the shortest end of the stick.

this is a complicated topic and anyone claiming that any single party wholly eats the cost of the tariff is wrong by definition.

The debt has to exist. Money has an origin point from which it is created. By the logic of double entry book keeping, every asset is also a liability. The debt is not something to worry about.

If it bothers people so much they can't think straight -- then just bring the interest rate below the growth rate (since the central bank is a monopoly, it can set the interest rate wherever it wants) or start running a trade surplus with foreign nations so that they are the ones in deficit.

But the "national debt" is not an actual problem. It is how the government injects money into the economy so the private sector (which includes you) can generate a surplus.

That's the key misunderstanding, money is created from the expansion of debt, and that debt has interest.
The system always wants to collapse into deflation. So you must expand the money supply to meet debt + interest caused deflation, but as these numbers get bigger these gyrations and crises require more and more debt/credit based "bandaids"..until the next contraction, more QE, more stimulus, more debt until the system becomes too unstable to patch.

Yea, this is a problem. But most of what I said isn't based on studies. It's common sense and how businesses actually operate. The exact distribution of the tariff burden would require an appropriate representative sample of underlying businesses and can easily be fudged to get a desired result. And I don't trust that libshart economists haven't done that.

But in terms of who pays tariff: importer, and who can bear the final burden of that tariff (exporter, importer, consumer) that's all accurate.

Nigger, there is no split into the pockets of workers. The raising of cost of company goods if anything actually means less jobs available except for companies that are at the top of the game (as per usual). You have unironically lowered the value of the dollar in this process, made it so megacorps win harder, and smaller businesses get raped and actually close up job openings, and since competition for mega corps is already peak, it will not be going back into workers pockets, it will be redistributed into the economy through institutional investors.

You are not right on this. The US does manufacture a great deal of stuff, but the stuff that it manufactures is things like petrochemicals and foodstufs - places where you can do a lot of automation.

IPhones, for example, are not that kind of labor. Its a lot of manual work to assemble. In labor intensity the things that need production reshoring will require a higher amount of labor to do . Robots aren't magic, and the tech isn't there to staff an iphone plant with tesla robots - they don't have the dexterity or adaptability of humans even on their limited production tasks.

Basically bringing that kind of production back is going to result in greater labor demands - there is no other solution short term.

>raise funds from the public
Huh? Why on earth would the government EVER need to raise funds from the public? It creates the money. How can it borrow its own currency? The public doesn't even have it until the government spends it into existence first.

Did you even watch the video? Did you listen to the explanation? Selling bonds is NOT a borrowing operation. It is a part of monetary policy to hit an interest rate target.

The moment the government spends to a deficit, by identity it has already created an amount of bank reserves equal to that deficit. They already exist. The government spent them into existence. But if reserves accumulate within the banking system, what happens to the interest rate? It gets driven down, potentially to zero. So bonds are sold to drain reserves. And bonds are also purchased to add reserves back to the banking system.

Of course, the central bank is a monopoly so it can set the interest rate wherever it wants.

I don't understand what this has to do with tax rates, I'm sorry.

But if you don't want to pay interest on the "debt" (which the government can ALWAYS afford to do because all of the debt is denominated in dollars of which the United States has a theoretically unlimited supply of), then don't pay interest on the debt.

There is no law of accounting that requires the US to pay this interest. Now they agreed to do it and they should honor existing agreements, but the US doesn't need to pay interest on its "debt". It doesn't need to sell bonds. Stop and think for 2 seconds.

Small companies benefit from tariffs the most, they are more flexible. You can literally start making a tariffed product in your garage today if you like and in doing so benefit from tariffs and create a new job. Tons of small businesses that operate like this that see the benefits of tariffs, especially since domestic demand rises with them and small businesses are the most demand capped, a guy who runs a shop with 2 guys in one shift can instantly triple production by hiring 6 more guys and starting a 3 shift production schedule if they just had the extra orders. A big company that has already optimized it's factories and runs 24/7 can't do that.

???

If we don't pay the interest on our debt, we will lose all foreign investment and it will significantly crash our economy and set precedent for China to take a huge portion of global economic control without a GDP miracle. That also turn the US Dollar into monopoly money, and that would overnight cause medicare, medicaid, social security, etc. to all get gutted severely instead of an ease off of those programs.

>Nigger, there is no split into the pockets of workers

I think you are confused by the scale of things. $1M is not a lot of money. I think you think a megacorp has capital in play of a million or so. I think you think a 'small business' is one of the amazon companies importing shit from china and reselling it. I don't think you actually understand manufacturing or production at all. I think your level of understanding of the industrial and business arts makes you view the world as you do.

I agree that one side effect of tariffs is to drop the value of the dollar though. I recognize that this would hurt the small businesses that exist on importing chinese shit and reselling it for 2x or 3x. One other side effect of a cheaper dollar is to increase the competitiveness of us producers in the global economy.

Calling Treasuries a “monetary policy tool” doesn’t erase the fact that they’re interest bearing IOUs held by real creditors who expect repayment. That’s borrowing no matter how you dress it up in balance sheet language. You're trying to reframe the act of issuing debt as some sterile reserve-management exercise but in doing so, you’ve just admitted the government ,Issues securities to the public ,Pays interest on them,Services them over time ,Rolls them over at maturity
That’s the literal definition of borrowing.

You can’t say “the government creates money, so it doesn’t need to borrow,” and then turn around and justify the existence of a $34 trillion debt market by calling it “just a policy tool.”
You're twisting logic in a circle

Yea this video is fucking retarded and one of the worst explanations of monetary policy I have ever heard. He is conflating what the Fed does and what the Treasury does.

The government, i.e. The Treasury, definitely borrows. They don't HAVE to and could just "print" money and inflate away the deficit, but that's not the choice being made.

You can't explain govt borrowing and monetary policy in the US without differentiating b/w Congress + Treasury and the Fed. This guy doesn't do that, so his lecture is nonsensical.

Yes, the government is paying interest. It's a policy choice. Maybe they should keep doing because pension funds like bonds and other big investors like bonds. Why wouldn't institutional investors like a guaranteed risk-free return?

But again -- there is no actual law of accounting or natural law that requires this process to take place. It is a self-imposed restraint, and if I was conspiratorial, I might say it looks like it was put in place to guarantee returns to the already wealthy.

Yes, the Treasury cannot "overdraft" its account at the Federal Reserve. But when the Fed holds a bond and receives interest from that bond, what does the Fed do with that money? It remits it back to the Treasury, minus expenses. So the Fed is very clearly a part of the government structure and is subordinate to the Treasury despite conspiracy theories.

I'm not confused at all, you do realize imports are more than just shit for amazon from china, right? We're talking steel, iron, copper, magnesium, spices, bananas, etc. to suggest this is simply a lens through the idea that is the only thing affected by tariffs is incredibly short sighted, and I would say you're the one that doesn't understand manufacturing.

Regardless of that, the US already produces and manufacturers more than we ever have in history, this boogieman that we're not producing is complete horseshit as well. A cheaper dollar will not increase competition domestically either, if you are suggesting that people who already don't want to work farming jobs and factory jobs would magically decide to go do that today, you're out of your mind. In fact, we would rather stomach that cost for no reason than bend the knee on the issue. Even the Mexicans don't go to the Midwest to farm anymore because it's not enough pay for the labor.

Removing foreign trade barriers is largely equivalent to putting up tariffs of your own. It's in fact both true that tariffs benefit the economy by creating jobs and that removing tariffs in exchange of economic concessions also benefits the economy and adds jobs (also known as art of the deal).

>>512478360
You "cleverly" switched your framing just now. It costs significantly less time and money to hire new people to run a machine that's underutilized than it is to add new factories, that means small business take the best advantage of new orders on a short time scale. The point is that small companies are more flexible and can more easily adjust their production than a large company can which means they benefit more from tariffs specifically. Obviously largely companies will also eventually adjust and increase domestic production and obviously they will eventually again just win but that doesn't mean tariffs weren't good for the small businesses. If big companies scale their domestic manufacturing that also creates jobs which is also good for the economy.

The point that is being made is that you don't actually need people to invest in your country because you physically, literally need the money. You don't. The government can always afford anything price for sale in its own currency.

You might need them to invest because they have specialized knowledge or resources you don't have. That's certainly a possibility. But when the government "sells bonds", it doesn't accept yen, yuan, rubles, etc. as payment. The only thing it accepts is its own debt (currency). In order to buy bonds these countries, banks, individuals, whatever, need to have US dollars first (which the government creates as debt through the logic of double entry bookkeeping).

Nigga, my framing has remained the same. Do you really think mom and pop shops, with Tariffs are going to outbid a fucking giga corp with bajillions of dollar in revenue? You're a complete fucking retard if you actually think that. Like if it really came down to it, and a company wanted to muscle up with the US, you realize the fictitious workers in your previous example, would be absolutely gobbled by the big corp first off, second off, your mom and pop stores gonna be out competed on resources alone, not even factoring in scalability.

So no, this hypothetical you're suggesting will not be common place, and the big corporation will still win. If anything, access to foreign resources is one of the only ways smaller companies can actually compete in the US.

Now as for the big company winning in the US, the goal isn't to create more low paying jobs in the US, which is what these jobs will be. They will be manual labor jobs, that American society has moved well past, which will barely do SHIT to the economy. Like I said before, we already produce a bunch of shit, we don't need niggas making T-shirts out here in the US lol. They don't need to, they need to be more flexible to adjust to new situation, that is a natural advantage they get in exchange for lacking economies of scale.

>which will barely do SHIT to the economy
All jobs are net benefit to the economy. If you have excess low skilled workers then they will bleed into mid skilled professions and lower their wages which then bleeds into high skilled professions and lowers their wages. If you add more jobs at the bottom it raises everyone wages. Doing a job is in fact more beneficial to the economy than being unemployed.
