Read up on European history. They spent centuries fighting each other in ruthless wars. That's actually why they came to rule the world. Europeans hated each other so much that they spent tons of time and energy on developing the best tools and tactics to kill one another. They got so good at this that when they finally ventured outside of Europe, they were able to conquer the rest of the world like shooting fish in a barrel.

They still have hate for each other, they just mask it behind narcissism. The French think they have the best food and wine. The Spanish think their food and wine is superior. Germans think they're better than everyone else. Italians think the rest of Europe are uncultured brutes. And on and on.

When you know you're a mongrel from different countries, you have to try to "make sense" of your identity. It's a conscious decision. Which other people who have "boring" family trees never really have to deal with. Like my family tree is Irish at least 8 generations. Yet she wishes she had more Irish blood, and was disappointed to learn it was only like 8% on one of those tests, it "felt" like something that spoke to her and that she would "like to identify with". She saw an Irish surname in her tree and got excited.

My ex before her, was a mix of two European countries that had France as a mutual enemy, so she tried to form an identity around that and making jokes about how they surrendered easily in WWII. But the point I'm actually trying to make here is that if WWII didn't even happen there would be some other thing they'd try to use to make sense of things and hold it together.

So to actually answer your question. "white" is the label that holds something like a Euro-mongrels of a soup of various countries together. You can say that's what you have in common. That's why it never resonates with people who aren't mixes.

In our Indian culture, fair skin tones are valued and seen as beautiful. But when I visit India, I am too fair to even fit the Indian standard of fairness. Those of us with albinism become foreigners in our own communities, and foreigners are often treated better than fellow Indians when visiting India.

People are overly hospitable to me: they smile at me and provide extra help. They remind me that I am not one of them. When I speak in Tamil, their eyes grow wide with surprise, and some people bluntly question whether I am really Indian.

To me, that is painful.

Now, when I am in the United States, I gain a lot of privileges since I pass so easily as white. I can find eyebrow pencils that are the color I need while my mom struggles to find makeup that fits her skin tone.
