I don't think people understand how bad it really is. Colleges are basically committing fraud at this point. They make students believe that they can get better jobs and higher pay, but salaries are actually pretty low and they have to compete with immigrants who are not honest about their skill sets. At the company I'm at, we get hundreds of applications for every job. Also a recent graduate starts at $25/hr and the McDonald's across the street starts at $21/hr. So with student debt, you actually make less than people with no education.

Credit card companies try to get people to pay off their student loans with their credit cards. Discover tried to get me to move the $30k balance I had on my loans, telling me how great it would be for my "cash back" balance that year. But I would have been paying over 20% APR instead of around 4%. I ended up paying off the loans entirely instead of dragging them out even though I probably could find somewhere to get over 4% for that money. One less thing to have to think about. I'm sure some morons hear 1% cash back and think no further about the consequences of doing the balance transfer.

Pretty sure that's the same with top ten schools in the US. Community college is basically free is most states if you apply for financial aid or just apply.
Anyways, most of the top schools in the US are private. Though it's pretty ridiculous they still need hundreds of millions from the government.

The degree itself is useless, and just proves you aren't an actual retard in that you sat through the course, but the high achiever scholarship I did came with mandatory work placement and a capstone project, so I left with a great portfolio of successful projects to sell myself.
I didn't really have much contact with the normgroid masses outside of the scholarship or the extra curricular crowd like running a shitty public broadcast show. I love that my producer from that went on to work on legacy media tv. Demonstrates how to make the adult babysitting system work for you.
