Pale skin has historically been seen as a mark of not being engaged in manual labor. Hence, it was a sign of aristocracy. Arostocrats and other members of ruling class had no need to be out in the sun, and they were supposed to be in doors all the time ruling their territory. Laborers, however, were considered the peasantry and, as such, laborers in outdoor conditions were expected to be tanned, swarthy, or dark skinned. It's very simple, actually. Pale skin just became associated with high status throughout history

But now people don't work in fields. Being pale is a sign of being indoors a lot, possibly unemployed and antisocial. Whereas being tanned is a sign you have money to go on holidays to tropical climates.
