I was at the top of my class in high school but then did nothing afterward besides some random side projects. Could’ve just went to uni, got a job, and worked up to being a manager by now. I went a normieish path and still have regrets. I went into science thinking I would do interesting things and learned that I wasn't very good at research. Couldn't handle the uncertainty and failure of experimentation. Now I wish I went into an easier and more lucrative field. My point is that taking the path that appears laid out for you can also result in disappointment. It doesn't seem like a good bet to rely on your work for satisfaction.
