While expensive audiofool headphone have been a thing for a long while they werent really considered consumer hardware but the rise in overcharging for consumer grade audio headphones began around the time the Beats By Dre brand became a thing around 20 years ago, despite most notable brands selling an array of competitively priced excellent headphones for reasonable prices the Beatz marketed almost primarily on fashion were able to charge several times more than what was considered the norm. This then became the norm when everyone discovered they were garbage and all the established players were literally giving their headphones away for under what retards would pay for them and here we are.

By this point it was more tape than headset so I had a good look at the problem and realised the entire top of the headband was COMPLETELY fatigued with cracks along every square centimetre of the plastic - it was then that I realised that it had been deliberately engineered so that the weak plastic was acting as the spring so that every time I stretch it over my head I was fatiguing the plastic - leaving the product entirely irredeemable and unrepairable.

Had my pair of Sennheiser HD650 for almost 15 years now. Turned out to be the best tech investment I've ever made. Changed the pads like every 5 years or so, but apart from that they're still going strong.

I had ATH-AD700 from audiotechnica for a long time. Paid 120 euros for them. Insane sound stage, I could hear everything in game it was like an auditory wallhack for CS.
After 10 years or so and with some abuse the left ear died and I was too lazy to open them up and do some soldering to reconnect the wires so I figured "Oh hey they have a new version of it (ad700x)". 250 euros. Same speakers. Different plastics and cable. "Huh let's give it a shot".
Didn't hold my head properly because the spring clamps at the head wouldn't work proper. Plastic cable disintegrated after a year.

I've had great success buying stuff from flea markets. Because nowadays hardly anyone wants a full-blown audio cabinet so I was able to find an entire stereo system for only 50 euro. We're talking a hardwood cabinet with an amplifier, radio tuner, a dedicated equalizer deck, 2-slot cassette deck and a turntable, plus matching floor standing speakers. It's solid as fuck and sounds great. Thing must have cost a pretty penny back in the day.

There is a sweet spot. Another anon mentioned "diminishing returns", which is correct.
At the $40 range, unless you found some hidden gem that no one no one knows about, you are just a jeet with no sense of audio quality, but you can often find a pair for around $100 that is perfectly good for the overwhelming majority of people and applications, and don't need to spend %600 on them.
I have had both, and can attest that the $600 ones are not worth it, and a pair of low-tier Sennheiser that doesn't make me broke sounds great for listening to music. As with everything, there is a sense of balance: audiophiles are just as retarded as anons who pull a pair out of the bargain bin at Walmart.

I went hard in the headphone cash sink for about a decade. The over the ear headphone market is a bloated segment where they realized they can rip off techies with 10 cent drivers and a bit of wood.
Furthermore over the ear headphones have a huge problem with seal where you will lose bass frequency with eyeglasses or hair.
Eventually I tried out moondrop quarks v1 for like 10 dollars and it was magic. The only thing I missed was the soundstaging but I could do without it. Sold all my over the ear some of which were 1k and avoided them since.
If I got another id just get a fiio ft1 or boss Bluetooth if I wanted brain cancer.
But desu I dont think over the ear have improved much since the hd600 from like 25 years ago. Some of the planar were great like chifiman but their comfort and durability left a lot to be desired.
