Look at the Balkans, they're all the exact same but hate each other to an insane level. Proximity has nothing to do with national rivalry, the Chinese and Japanese have had issues with each other for over a thousand years. Ever since the Japanese emperors declared themselves equal/superior to the Chinese emperor and stopped sending tribute and China in reply stopped giving them ceremonial authority over Korea.
