I think modern science awards early starters too much. Infact all professional fields are like this. Can't play chess at GM level unless you started at 3, 9 at BEST if you are extremely gifted. In my experience the problem with modern Science (and Academia in general) is that it is cursed by midwits who engage in highschool lunch table politics and sniping at each other. My belief ,atleast for fields like math, physics, theoretical CS, chemistry, biology etc is that it has become a cesspit of the olympiad medalists keep getting pushed further and further. Especially in math and physics and CS. I genuinely believe if the olympiad existed even before we wouldn't have stories like Grothendieck finding his muse at 30s or Yitang Zhang starting education at 21 to publishing the first progress in twin prime conjecture at his 50s.

It has become a professional sport in a sense. Kids learn college math at 9th grade to do these olympiads/papers to do the algorithm that gets you into MIT/Harvard and then it keeps pushing these kids upwards at expense of the outsiders
