Yes, and this is why they never want to seriously discuss it. They always claim that it's already illegal (even though they are all doing it). Then they claim that that they want fresh new local leaders and businessmen to get involved in politics because America needs their insight, but "insider trading laws" will discourage them because they'll be forced to divest in their companies and investments to run for office. They claim that this will lead to even more lifetime politicians since a businessman or a successful person won't want to throw away everything that they worked for to temporarily run for office. But then if you suggest that maybe we should instead have term limits they'll just find other reasons why that can't happen.

Basically it's never going to happen because the only reason that anyone gets into politics anymore is to stuff their own pockets and you're asking these people to pass a law that makes it illegal to do so.

The "outsider" was going to make a buy or sale regardless of the action of the insider. In fact, had the insider been allowed to act on their inside information, the price of the asset would have been more accurately represented in the market. In fact, prohibiting insider trading punishes other "outsiders" because they don't have optimal price info.
