There is no Pagan figure, or spirit, that appeals to the sentimental person or the weak person going through difficulty in the way that Jesus does. There are millions of Europeans/whites alive today who feel that it was Jesus who got them through a particularly tough time. Jesus, in this way, provides an answer to the problem of suffering that particularly appeals to a large swath of European people. To take that away would be like taking medicine away from the patient.
To do away with Christ would be to leave a gigantic hole in Europe's psyche. It could potentially be filled with a god-like figure akin to Hitler. Someone who possessed so much ability, and so much aura, and with a propaganda machine behind him, that large amounts of people could place their trust or their faith in him. But Hitler's come along only once a century, if that; whilst Europeans have been building Jesus' lore for centuries. Of course, it needn't be a sun-god like Hitler, but could instead be a more conventional saint, like Gandhi, or a Pagan Mother Teresa.

The first Europeans had a completely different set of religious beliefs, probably mostly animistic and shamanistic for tens of thousands of years. But then this true original ancestral religion was supplanted and replaced by the religious beliefs of the proto-indo-Europeans as they migrated out of the central Eurasian steppes into Europe approximately 3000-1000 BC.
Europeans only followed classical paganism for a few thousand years at most before they converted to Christianity. There are parts of Europe which have already been Christian for significantly longer than they were classically pagan.
