It most certainly was not 'designed' to be a high waged skilled worker society. European unions and guilds prior to WW2 basically required a king's ransom for their services and refused to mass produce consumer modules. They also rebelled against factories because it was lower the quality of their crafts. The US offered more factory work with less regulations, then after WW2 they made CNC machines, so all of the unions in the US then did the same thing that EU unions did and started claiming that these new machines allowed for idiots to take their job and makes cheap garbage. So then they moved it to Japan, and the unions were right it did make mostly garbage, but that didn't stop Reagan from fucking unions anyway and trying to automate more in China. Now China has dark factories that can run with the lights off and even less labor rights than Japan. Turns out MacArthur gave Japan too many labor rights and the CIA basically spent all their time trying to undo them, it was successful, but they couldn't touch the constitution. China basically has nothing, it's a free-for-all for private companies. I can't imagine it gets even lower than this, not even Brazil would have accepted China's model back in the 90s.
