The parlor existed because homes would often have the family business being run out of it. This is why 9 out of 10 Americans did not work for anyone outside of the family, and had no need to report income taxes. Everything about income tax, social security cards, the census, and the federal reserve was to break apart the backbone of society. "Open concept" houses are closer to what you are talking about. You find more individual rooms in older homes. Though truely open concept is pretty terrible so you are starting to see a combination of both for better balance.
