Interview with a Russian Prisoner of War in the Pokrovsk Area
The interview took place on August 7, 2025 – During our front-line trip to Myrnohrad, I and the Finland-Swedish journalist Mikael Storsjö had the opportunity to interview a Russian prisoner of war, a radio operator from a sabotage group. He was the only survivor in the group that entered Myrnohrad.

The prisoner, whom we call Ivan, is in his 30s, married, and has two children in Russia.
He is a trained engineer and participated as a volunteer contract soldier.
According to him, it was financial motives that drove him to sign a contract in April 2025.

After one month of basic training and radio operator training, he was sent to the front in June.

Ivan says he was surprised by the humane treatment he received from the Ukrainian forces.

When told about reports where soldiers, despite such clauses, were forced to return to fighting, he maintained his belief in Russian law, even though Russia has not yet had “full” benefit of his service (only 2.5 months of full duty).
