Western roman empire couldnt protect its borders anymore so they designed a cultural system to hold onto power indirectly using Christianity as a focal point. They promised to back Kings loyal to the pope and respect his and his bloodlines right to rule and make it christian law that they had "Divine right" to rule. Before this the right to rule was held up by the "right of conquest", which could make succession very hard at times when a father dies before his son is able to rule effectively.
After divine right to rule a kings son could be supported by the pope and if another king tried to move in on his territory he could lose favor with the pope or even be excommunicated.

The pope would have the kings to get his subjects to go to church and engage with Christianity, in return those subjects had special rights in the country, like the right to not be needlessly assaulted/killed or a target for thievery. It was known as the "kings law" and it included being a christian. If you practised outside of this set of rules then you were an "outlaw" and no longer protected by the kings law and could be hunted like an animal for whatever loot you dropped, so to speak.

I'm not baptized.
I went to a private Catholic school and served mass.
I was atheist for most of my life.
It's only when I stopped being a materialist and trying to find happiness and peace outside that I found god inside.
History, where it all began, it's secondary for me. If we know we know, if we don't we don't.
I don't need to know everything to believe in something. Or else I would still live without moral and probably still be depressed because life didn gave me everything I want.

I don't agree that all pagan traditions originated there. They were traditions not religions in that they developed and evolved in all the different places alligned to local natural environment. Countries without acces to sea didn't have sea deities, deserts create different habits and mindset than lush forests in its inhabitants. Sumeria had their own local traditions, whether they describe fictional or real happenings, they happened over there not here. Same as with the abrahamic lore, its their local stuff, not ours. We may be affected by it somehow, over time, its good to know about. But it doesn't mean it happened to us and our ancestors.
So in short, I think traditions developed locally and don't all stem from one source. They may influence each other along the way.
