By the time he was interviewed on TV he was already backed into a corner. It was not some "master plan". It was the neighbour who was in Shannan's FB chat 24/7 who knew something was wrong and called the police to the house before he had gotten home for work the next morning, and when TV coverage flocked she pushed him to do an interview because she suspected him and pressured him on his strange lack of panic over their disappearance.
He took the interview to throw off that suspicion, but ended up immediately framing himself as the obvious culprit. In the same time they're doing that TV interview, police who already bodycam'd him the day before, are searching his place of work, and I think it's on the 3rd day that he's about to go to the airport with his dad, but is stopped for questioning, where he's then broken down to confess over 2 days.

It's not some kind of super pre-planned thing. He simply got caught immediately after committing the crime and squealed until they got him pinned down.
