That image is literally not true. In 1990 when the Soviet Union fell, Ukraine had THREE TIMES bigger GDP than Poland. Ukraine was the most developed and rich (in comparison to other parts fo Soviet Union) country in former Warsaw Pact (not because of Ukrainians of course, but because Russians were investing in it). After 30 years they LITERALLY wasted all this potential and became african-tier country, with Poland having 5 times bigger GDP. To sum this up: Ukrainians are RETARDS that waste EVERYTHING and their country isn't a bare wasteland only because they were governed by Poles, Austrians and Russians. You are completely right that there is certain eceonomic shocks that happen to these countries joining EU (and I can imagine there is similarities and dangers that could also be observed in the russian 90s) and that these applied to Greece, Romania, and Poland, for example. Greece, at least, had the advantage of being a big tourist destination that profits from Schengen et.al. and having their territorial disputes with Türkiye being massively disarmed with joining.

I would have preferred a different outcome than would see today.
