pride, is the traditional answer given by abrahamic mystical traditions. and maybe having committed his initial mistake, he found himself trapped and couldn't face the music, so the mistakes compounded and he eventually found himself in a prison of his own making. i wonder a lot about the psychology of the demiurge/satan. it can't be that much fun (though i wouldn't be surprised if he and his followers were very good at compartmentalizing and lying to themselves and claiming to be happy, though).

i think the demiurge/satan finds himself in a "lose-lose" situation, the only question now is whether it will choose to destroy itself or change. i suppose that's the same question facing many of us who are in difficult situations. change or die? it's a quirk of consciousness that many would rather die than make the required decision to evolve. some kind of inertia perhaps.
