His message was for the Jews of his time. Not the gentiles, not the pagans. The Jews listened, and followed their Messiah.

The ones that did not listen were the Babylonians that accompanied the Jews to Jerusalem after the captivity. The pharisees and saducees, keepers of the written law that became the Talmud. The priest-kings and lawyers of their day that practiced blood ritual and human sacrifice, as their cultural heirs from Europe continue to do today.

They welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem in the old ritual fashion of making the poor criminal into a king, before sacrificing him. After that, the first generation of converts were hunted and executed by butchers like Saul of Tarsus.

After much kvetching, Rome experienced a level of autistic wrath that hadn't been seen since the destruction of Carthage.
