I seemed smarter than most people I went to school with, but was impulsive, semi aggressive, and awkward with people. Life's been basically a roller coaster in terms of highs and lows. Anything but just normal.
A lot of this could really boil down to telling kids that raw intelligence was everything and inflating their egos. The reality is trust, socialization, consistency, hard work, nepotism, willingness to take risk, etc etc all play a role in success. Intelligence is just one part of the equation.
Wasn't just the GATE program either. The whole culture in the 90's made it out like intelligence automatically equals success.
