You can make your own Tomato trelis with just stakes and twine. Much cheaper but less reusable.

I plant my tomatoes in rows and place a metal stake every few plants then run twine around the stakes and tomatoes.

Last summer I tried growing extremely spicy peppers because they're hard to find here. I bought the plants from a nursery and within a weak something ate everything but the stem and all I had left was sticks in the ground. I was so pissed that I never gardened again.

I do it at night. I have bright LED flashlight that really makes bugs stand out. I also smoke a doobie right before and notice more things about the plants and what they are needing.

It's also cooler at night but the bugs do eventually come to the light. I just shut it off for a minute or so and watch the moon.

Stupice is my go-to. Disease resistant, grows well in almost any climate, smallish tomatoes though. But profuse. Golf ball sized, so a bit bigger than cherry tomatoes. Amish paste are good too, good fresh eaters which aren't all watery as well. I like 'em for a BLT or burgers.

Because 1 hour of burger flipping STILL buys you more than 1 day of digging your veggie patch. Just try to figure out how many tomatoes you need to sell for the equivalent wage. And i mean as the producer, not the storefront. Which also includes transportation, water and fertilizer costs etc.

Yeah, i grow tomatoes, it's still cheaper than *buying tomatoes*, but the issue is the selling and time investment. A full time homestead is a 9-5 equivalent and it doesn't pay any bill. It's okay if you live like an Amish, but even the Amish have jobs, because homesteading is incredibly inefficient.
If you wanna make money homesteading you end up growing a huge field of tomatoes and sell in bulk. But then you're just a tomato farmer specialized in one efficient culture.

Most people have a veggie patch because that's still healthy and relatively efficient. Making all your food wouldn't be.
