The chinese were barred from importing rifles in the warlord era pre ww2. They got some pistols and mostly just made very crude copies of the pistols like that stocked c96 that were crude blowback guns made by non gunsmiths where it would have the shape of a known pistol but have random engrish on it and non working parts like adjustable sights and other shit like the toggle locks where it would just be a solid block of metal in the general shape of the real part.

The commies basically did no fighting from 1940 to 1944ish cause they did the 100 regiments offensive and gained a little ground but took really heavy losses in the offensive and when the japanese counter attacked. Mao wasn't onboard with the offensive and a couple generals just did it anyways cause he did not hold absolute power yet. They then just kind of sat in the mountains for 3 to 4 years trying to rebuild the army back to the size it used to be.
