Why aren't you growing food, anon?
They want you wholly dependent on them for nutrition so that you'll go fight their war in exchange for an expired MRE.

Don't grow tomatoes, then. Or do them indoors. There are lots of berry bushes that really thrive in relatively shady conditions because they evolved in the shade of huge trees.

Beefposter anon here back to remind people about harnessing the power of the sun with GRASS and ruminant animals.

The community herds have continued to be a success at making sure everyone has good meat every holiday.
We got the council to build more shared-feeding chicken coops spread out on properties just outside of town. A rotating 50% of the town residents now have regular access to fresh local eggs.

growing your own crap only makes sense for herbs, like extra bits and pieces to add to a meal. chickens for the fun of it. additional extras that make up less than 3% of the totality of what youll eat

its effort for almost nothing in return. you only do it for the pleasure of it

no. its not a viable alternative to sustain yourself. you either live on farmland, and that will make it viable, otherwise its just a fun little thing to make you feel like you're taking control of your life or some crap

buy a big sack dry beans, those things store for like 5 years. indoor chickens if it really comes to it. learn to fish. maybe have a couple of fruit trees if you have space on your lawn, and make sure they produce fruit in different seasons. thats about as good as it gets

Horticulture is agriculture of plants in general. Permaculture is essentially a design philosophy for entire plant ecosystems. You focus on plants that are either perennial or will self replicate in the assigned spot well enough that you don't have to plant it every year. Companion planting dramatically improves plant health, so it's worth reading about even if you do only end up growing annuals, though. The meme combo here is corns, beans and squash.

>horticulture
The act of gardening or plant management for specific benefit to the garden as a whole.
Usually for the purposes of production.
>permaculture
The act of gardening or plant management in relation to ideology, usually referenced by natural balancing of an ecosystem for specific goals.

Example
horticulture
>I will cut down a few of these trees so the bushes underneath get more sun, but not too much sun
permaculture
>i will cut down this one tree so more sunlight comes into the underbrush because these native bushes are too young to sustain themselves in heavy shade yet and if I leave them alone they won't develop enough before the other plants shade them out and they die
>so I will choose the youngest tree or most sickly tree that isn't endangered

They can mean the same thing, but the reasoning and the management style can be absurdly different.

My mother is a botanist who genetically engineers roses and bushes, her job for the state of TN is to research ways to ensure grafted plants native to TN outperform invasive species of plants.
This is a form of permaculture FYI.

And NP, it's actually incredibly useful to know these things.
Glad you've taken an interest, because you can't just plant trees and "save the world".
There is a very professional artform to creating a small forrest less you end up with a bunch of dead shrubs/plants and a billion pine trees doing nothing.
See all of USA for citation, literally just endless young trees doing jack shit for the environment because we stripped entire forrest down and when we replanted the trees we didn't replant the shrubbery. Which is why all these invasive species are growing like wildfire.
