This is grossly overstated. We have fragmentary evidence in ancient copies much closer to the time period. We also have the various translation strains that spread throughout the surrounding areas. You can compare the Greek with translations that were made into Latin, Syriac, Coptic, etc. With the Old Testament you compare the Hebrew/Aramaic with the Septuagint and other strains. Modern translation methodology follows an eclectic approach which takes the whole situation into account rather than relying on a single source for textual decisions.
