Just watched this scene from Born on the Fourth of July movie, (link: https://youtu.be/aBADjCeFnuU ), and I’m honestly wrecked.
Ron (the injured Vietnam vet), tries to talk to his mom, and you can see it hit him all at once:
Everything he believed in, the war, the flag, the cause, was a lie. Man, I’m not gonna lie, I actually cried watching it.
What blows my mind is how almost every single boomer right-winger in the ’60s cheered this war on.
They wrapped themselves in the flag, sent their kids off to die, and never questioned it until it was too late.
The same generation raised on stories about Washington and Jefferson somehow ignored that the Founders warned explicitly against foreign entanglements. Jefferson himself would’ve been horrified at fighting a pointless war halfway around the world.
How did a whole generation get so lobotomized by the government and media?
How do you go from “Don’t tread on me” to “Send our boys to die in the jungle for… nothing”?
It’s insane to think about.
It’s not just the personal tragedy. It’s what that war, and the mindset behind it, did to America.
As a libertarian, it’s humiliating to think how easily the country was manipulated.
We went from “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” to “Send your sons to die in a jungle for… what?”
It’s like watching the light go out of a nation’s soul.
