I went to the park today with my 16 month old son and I realized while watching him play with the other kids and vice versa, he might have autism. I realized a lot of the other toddlers seem overall more aware of their surrounding, better emotional control, seem to have better motor skills with climbing and balance, and less repetitive play. I feel my wife is too overprotective and coddles him too much with love for him to really challenge himself or put him in uncomfortable situations to grow. Especially when it comes to protecting him emotionally, she's never lets him cry if he starts throwing a tantrum and I'm wondering if I'm making a mistake by allowing this to continue. My son looks almost one hundred percent identical to me and I wonder at times if I was like him at his age. The difference was though that my parents were very strict and wouldn't hesitate to yell or physically discipline me if I threw a tantrum, behaved bad or acted stupid, which is the complete opposite of the way my wife is raising my son. I honestly don't mind one bit that I had to go through that as a kid. I think I came out much better for it because I did very well in school, had plenty of friends and am doing very well for myself as an adult. I wonder whether I need to start doing the same thing with my son to hopefully reverse course of his autism.
