Did Russia intentionally create an energy crisis in Europe before their invasion, on the assumption that it would discourage support for Ukraine?

at the end of 2021 there was a couple months of tension and negotiations regarding the issue of Ukraine shelling Donetsk and Russia preparing to do something about it. That created the tension in the gas markets.

At the time I was working in a field peripheral enough to be aware of the market action at the time. For months there was on/off tension about a war breaking out there and prices spiked on speculation and massive buying in Europe to fill their coffers in case case supplies were cut-off.
