Why can't Americans handle alcohol? All of these podcaster e-celebs make such a big deal about being off the wagon for x amount of years and can't stop talking how good it is for their health/mental health or they can't stop talking about how much they drink every day and all the times they got wasted. Seems like an either or option for them.

Just have a beer/wine for dinner during the weekdays and have some more alcohol in weekend like we do here.

E-celebs are all degenerates with no self control, so of course they all allow themselves to become alcoholics and junkies. They're also all raging narcissists, which is why they think the inane drivel that spills out of their mouths is worth broadcasting.
Anyone who makes their living talking into a microphone is a subhuman.
Alcohol is poison though.

That's boomer culture.
Only college kids and white trash live like that nowadays. Normal people don't drink every day. Alcohol really ruins your health. It's a neurotoxin that attacks the entire system. I just buried an old neighbor with liver cancer again. 5 months from diagnosis to death. He only cried.

There's just something unique to American capitalism, it's brutal. Businesses here are empowered to cause as much damage as necessary to get their profits.

That's why we had opioid epidemic and you did not. Alcohol, there "studies" saying it was actually good for you, couple that with american marketing to young people and you have a very sick culture around alcohol.

Why did you bury your neighbor twice? Did the first time not take? Is he a zombie?

Sober since February of 2020 after drinking for 35 years. No financial problems, job performance was great, zero legal issues. My wife stopped and asked if I would stop with her. Happy wife, happy life. I won't say that it was easy. It's a huge commitment. Definitely lost a lot of people that I considered friends. A lot less social interaction now. Never hungover, will likely live a longer, healthier life and don't have to worry about having said or done anything stupid the night before. I liked high-end wines, tequila and bourbon, so it also saves a lot of $.

>Why did you bury your neighbor twice? Did the first time not take? Is he a zombie?
Yes, genius, you've figured it out. He is a zombie.

My history is similar. Most of my drinking buddies, I lost the moment I stopped going to bars every two days. Of maybe 40 or 50, only 3 maintained contact. The rest either stopped calling after a few days to weeks or didn't call at all. Not really a big loss in hindsight, they're all losers and after a while you get tired of hearing the same old stories and jokes and excuses. A few of them are dead now. Nobody even told me when it happened.

I was broke all the time when I still drank, then made a lot of money after getting sober. Simply because I stopped wasting large amounts of time and money on alcohol and because I was always sober and healthy enough to take the good opportunities when they came along.

I married a Japanese investment banker, she was busy building her list of business contacts before we met and now we're both doing it. Knowing lots of people that way has the nice side effect that you always have enough interesting people available for group activities that most people stopped doing when they left college. Most of our friends nowadays are just business contacts that stuck. Because they have similar interests or kids of the same age or are just fun to have around.

I don't drink, but I used to. And their claims about how bad it is are WAY overstated. People can drink insane amounts of alcohol without suffering any lasting damage.
Some "poison". It can't even kill a person who downs 12 servings per night, every night, for 10 years.
Quitting was hard, but I managed. I don't think my health is vastly improved since quitting ~ 3 years ago.

HP Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard had this exact same argument like 100 years ago. Sure, it's poison, but it's poison that people willingly ingest to make their unbearable existences somewhat better. Who are you to tell a working man he can't have a beer at the end of another day of slave existence?

Well, I mean, I'm not significantly healthier after quitting. Presumably if it were a poison, I'd feel a lot better after quitting, right?
I don't. I feel no difference. At all. And I drank a lot for over a decade. I quit just to see if I could. And now I'm sticking with it simply because I have no desire to drink.
It wasn't even dramatic. I just stopped one day. Yes, it was hard for a week. I was agitated and angry and uncomfortable. But then it was over and life was just the same as when I was drinking.
If I'd quit Arsenic, or Lead, or low doses of Strychnine, I imagine the difference would be palpable.

North Americans drink like Russians. They cant simply enjoy a taster of wine or beer with a meal. Binge drinking is a big problem in North America and alcoholics are rampant. The advertising companies and entertainment industry have made drinking a cool thing. University and College should be about learning and accellerating your educational life but its been turned into Frats, getting wasted and getting laid. If you arent binge drinking and trying to get laid on campus you are a loser. This lifestyle carries on into the future because it becomes an addiction and a lifestyle...then one day when they are 40something years old they get a bloodtest and their liver levels are in the red and they get an Ultra Sound and they have Fibrosis of the liver that couod progress into Cirrhosis. The alcohol companies never talk about that do they?

The thing is, humans have developed a very high alcohol tolerance since when they became sedentary 10000 or so years ago. Alcoholized drinks were simply the safest available option if you had no heating fuel to spare. For thousands of years. So as long as you're young, you don't notice much of the damage. The difference first becomes noticeable in your 30's and it really hits in the 40's and 50's. Later on it makes all the difference. Then it's too late to repair the damages.

You've misread my post if you think I'm requesting or feel obliged of any praise. If anything, I've cautioned others about the difficulty involved with making this choice and sticking to it.

As German anon mentioned above, you have a lot more time to be productive and save a lot of $ when you stop drinking.

Yes, alcohol is a very slippery slope. For me, it had to be all or nothing because that's the path that I chose. I didn't have anyone in my circle of friends who would ever stop at 1 or 2 drinks. This went for co-workers as well as social contacts.

There's a massive amount of pressure in the US to drink. Billions of $s spent on advertising and it is literally ubiquitous. I dind't even have to spend $ to drink with airline club memberships and airline status. I could get multiple drinks per day for free while traveling and then many more in the evenings with my work expense account. The company I work for now also enjoys the benefits of me not spending any $ on alcohol, plus they get a far more efficient employee.

Good job not getting infected by your zombie neighbor. That must have been scary.

All of this. The quality of work used to be very solid, but it has increased even more now that I'm sober. The only thing I miss out on are drunken late nights at the bar with co-workers and customers. I build new bonds in other ways now with co-workers and customers. Many of them have no stopped drinking as much or even completely as well.

The "friends" that I lost when I stopped drinking, I soon realized were not real friends. Many of them are definitely problem drinkers and the last thing they want to do is be around someone who quit because it makes them self-conscious about their problem(s).

I don't know if it's my Irish DNA or the Czech DNA, but I could out-drink anyone I ever met. I rarely even had bad hangovers. IN 35 years, I never once passed out or barfed from drinking. People could rarely even tell that I had been drinking unless they had been drinking with me.

Every human being is different. My wife would be buzzed after 1, silly after 2 and drunk after 3. If she had a 4th, she'd be hungover for 2 days.
