I got my current job after a single application back in 2023 and it's super comfy. Pay isn't amazing but it comes with a pension and excellent benefits, plus I work remote meaning I get to play video games and shitpost most of my work day. The last "real" job I had (I work for myself from home now) I got the job basically on a phonecall and a single sit-down once I moved here. The problem was, it was pre-Covid, so workers were still kind of considered "disposable" or "replaceable" and the place was one of those where the managers have to run it so aggressively cost-cutting (for some reason) that if they even think you're not busy or doing work, they'll just send you home for the day. And on top of that, they did functionally no training or anything close to a mentorship wherein you gain the basic skills needed to function at the job. If you were on the sales side, you were just expected to know everything about every product on the market, period. If you were on the equipment side, you just needed to be told "Do it this way" once and then never make a mistake or have the wrong instincts, because if you did you were out the door.

I lost that job in 2019, but I do still go to the place for some stuff these days, and yesterday they were absolutely crammed full of customers with like, 1/3 of the number of people working they needed to operate. So now their service is worse, because they refuse to both retain and pay people to actually keep the place running smoothly.

The real problem is that most jobs able always been quasi-slave labor jobs and not professions or careers. Boomers came up in an economy where there was enough money being thrown around that even quasi-slaves were making money. That economy matured and now they’re not, so they get paid shit, out-sourced, off-shored, replaced by immigrants, or automated to cut costs. But only actual professions: lawyers, doctors, bankers, engineers, etc. have ever had truly good jobs and it remains that way now. In the current US economy its like your forced to get a girlfriend/partner just to make ends meet today. Living on your own in the US is like a luxury now, if you live on the US coasts its even more of a luxury. It's everywhere like that now, don't think you can weasel your way out to some other country because you will learn the hard way. Now keep in mind you have certain privileges as a white guy if you go to brown or asian countries and you will be treated better because of your skin tone but as a native in those countries you experience exactly what you are experiencing.

Apartments should not cost 2 or 3 thousand dollars a month to live in a box with simple utilities. There has to be a nationwide program that its all streamlined, helps house every homeless person, every person who is below the federal US poverty line, etc.

This program should have a tenant that says "If you work 40 hours a week, full time regardless of how much money you make, you get to have your own free apartment. Free of cost, maybe 150 a month for a deposit but basically free.
