For most and I mean most alcoholics, AA is the only thing that works. I don’t think it’s a cult, there isn’t any gain, there is no leader. The most unscrupulous activities in AA are people who get into “recovery” to make money off of rehabs, and that isn’t directly tied to AA as an organization.

Got friend who is set to go into a rehab for their addiction. If some kind of thread about rehab comes about in a month or so after they're out I'll find out first hand if rehab is a joke, recruitment centre or chemical lobotomy site.

I hope my friend comes out the other side okay, but all the info I can find online tells me otherwise and the whole thing looks like a voluntary prison site, free shelter, food, water etc and all you have to do is comply with all their rules and don't fuck around or get physical or you'll get transferred to a higher security facility and I might never speak to that friend again. I can't even visit them whilst they're in the rehab either, so it's going to be a boring month indeed.

yeah it's totally fucked my friends life upside down currently. absolute clusterfuck of problems happened all at once and they collapsed from not drinking. I offered to watch over them for a week to taper down their drinking but they want the withdrawal medication and that's only available through insurance if they do the rehab first.

I find out in a month if they come out at all, I might not even hear anything.

It's mostly just people trying to stop drinking and find self control. They tend to be huge gossips because they're stuck at the oral stage of human development and don't have their booze pacifier anymore. But they make it clear your higher power can be anything, and there's atheist AA. It's not really a cult because there's no leader but each individual's higher power, there's no sleep deprivation, there's no food deprivation, and money offerings at meetings are optional.

AA saved my life. I was a terrible alcoholic, to the point I was drinking every waking moment, homeless, unemployed, the works. Sober 2 years now and my life is the best its ever been.


Stay away from AA women though. They will fuck your shit up, no matter how many years they have.

You aren’t required to admit anything to anyone. I just talk about the importance of self love and self forgiveness and love not being about judgement when I go because it makes the women more likely to hook up with me even if they have a bf

alcoholics anonymous is the worst cult on the planet. there are no fees or dues, no singular person or group of persons is in charge, you can show up or not whenever you please, and you can speak your mind and no one corrects you. the only requirement is a desire to stop drinking.

12 step programs are agents of mind-controlling cults. All studies as to their effectiveness show no evidence that they work better than trying to quit cold turkey on your own. They work way worse than substance abuse counseling without the 12 steps.
