Are you a zoomer? Analogue drugs and analogue weed has been around for a while. There are a variety of chemicals that somewhat emulate some parts of weed.

When I was young there was a great one called spice (the original, many followed) it was a THC molecule with a little addition that was bio inert.

It got outlawed and the research chemicals that followed were addictive poison that just vaguely resembled weed. It got so bad with people spraying their ditch weed to sell more I switched to exclusively smoking high quality weed.

Plants aren't premature, they are just selected for fast growth, fast finish genetics. Grown in SOG and scrog methods, no buckets or outdoors. Temp is the most important variable.

Most regular weed starts off as THCa weed. It is dried, cured, then tested, packed, and distributed.

THCA weed is dried at lower temps, then tested, THEN cured and packaged. By the time it gets to you, it would not pass the COA because most of the thca is converted to THC by then. Especially if it sat in a hot car or storage room at some point.

Further, THCd9 levels were genetically optimized for testing for show when that industry came around. Prior to 2012ish, all the weed had mixed cbd/thc/thca/cbd etc levels. Many growers are going back and finding excellent THCA and CBD producers locked up in old pre 2000's genetics.

Another factor is consumption method. Baked into edibles, it's fully converted.
Vaped, depends on vape temp.
Smoked in a joint, it's mostly converted.
Smoked in a spliff or blunt, it's completely converted.
Smoked in a bong, most of it is lost to incineration, just like with regular weed. But it depends on your grind and lighting technique.

The smell of weed mostly comes from the terpenes, all of which are found in other food sources. Lilalool (lavender) limonene (citrus) carophylene (black pepper) humulene (hops), mycerene (mangos, nutmeg), ocimine (chamomile), pinene (pine). and a few dozen more. The majority of your spice cabinet has compounds which a strain of weed can produce is greater quantities.

The "diesel" smell usually comes from a combo of humulene carophylene mycerene and pinene in a certain ratio. Sage and hops have similar compounds amd ratios. The thing that makes IPA's taste like bitter grapefruit is the same thing that makes weed smell like ammonia/diesel.

The oil is a minor contributor to the smell, as frying a grilled cheese sandwich or equivalent typically burns off 100x the amount of oil.
