I think it's just that people are becoming more aware of how exploitative modern monetization strategies are and rebelling against them. Video games are still by far the cheapest form of entertainment and nothing else even comes close. When I bought Factorio it was the price of the average movie ticket but I've probably got thousands of hours out of it. If those entertainment hours had been spent watching movies, going clubbing or whatever I would've had to spend hundreds or even thousands of times as much. It's also easy to multitask games with other shit in a way that allows you to get some productive use out of the time too. When I used to play WoW I would just practice guitar or cook or lift weights or whatever while waiting on raids. I will usually have audiobooks etc on while actively playing games etc, so there's an element of parallelism to it as well that doesn't really exist with a lot of other entertainment/timewasting/etc. I find a lot of the "life optimization" shit cringe, but basically all my friends from school who played video games also learned instruments, learned programming etc while those who mostly watched TV didn't, and I've always suspected that it's because these things are easy to do while sitting at a computer, and the internet even gives you all the resources you need to learn. I literally have a guitar in my lap as I'm typing this lmao.

Most of the good games were made ages ago. The last truly classic PC game was Fallout 3 or Skyrim. Fortnite and PUBG and Roblox are all ephemeral, they're popular because they're popular and they will fade over time. Minecraft will have staying power but free version are already out there and improving rapidly. I know a couple kids in my area play CDDA, my wife's a teacher and I asked their computer guy about the games they play (they have a gaming club) and that's one the kids suggested. Not retro but at least Free.

I have over 100 old Thinkpads and probably 40 old Macs. Lots of small computers too like the Toshiba Librettos and HP palmtop PCs like the 200LX.

Not even a zoomie, but I simply have too many games in my backlog. Buying more at this point would be a waste and there isn't any upcoming games that make me feel like I MUST buy them at launch.

It took Cyberpunk more than 3 years to become "relatively" bug free and more performant, and it was still missing most of the promised stuff, so iy's no wonder people no longer bu on launch day.
