The comp science dream is over - "learn to code" was a meme
Fresh computer science graduates are facing unemployment rates of 6.1% to 7.5% — more than double what biology and art history majors are experiencing, according to a recent Federal Reserve Bank of New York study. A crushing New York Times piece highlights what’s happening on the ground.

The individual stories are surreal. Manasi Mishra, 21, graduated from Purdue after being promised six-figure starting salaries, only to receive a single interview, at Chipotle (she didn’t get the job.) Zach Taylor has applied to nearly 6,000 tech jobs since graduating from Oregon State in 2023, landing just 13 interviews and zero offers. He was even rejected by McDonald’s for “lack of experience.”

The alleged culprits? AI programming tools that are eliminating junior positions, while big names like Amazon, Meta and Microsoft slash jobs. Students say they’re trapped in an “AI doom loop” — using AI to mass-apply while companies use AI to auto-reject them, sometimes within minutes.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little chutiya? I'll have you know I graduated top of my batch in IIT Bombay, and I've been involved in numerous secret hackathons for ISRO, and I have over 300 confirmed open-source contributions on GitHub. I am trained in full-stack development and I'm the top coder in the entire Indian tech industry. You are nothing to me but just another noob. I will debug your code with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this subcontinent, mark my words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the internet? Think again, bhai. As we speak, I am contacting my network of coders across Bangalore and your IP is being traced right now, so you better prepare for the cyber storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your startup. You're fucking done, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can hack your system in over 700 ways, and that's just with my Raspberry Pi. Not only am I extensively trained in Python, but I have access to the entire arsenal of Kali Linux tools, and I will use them to wipe your miserable website off the face of the internet, you little paanwala. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn bewakoof. I will DDoS fury all over you, and you will drown in it. You're fucking finished, kiddo. Jai Hind!

Boomers are based, say what you want.
They actually have social cohesion and some kind of network based on knowing people from back in 19XX. Their society works - for them.

Gen X are the ones currently employed by boomers, licking their ass and grinding for money.

Us millennials are already atomized, nobody trusts anyone, people die and nobody cares. We fell for the education meme in a world where education is worthless because of the internet.

Gen Z? idk even what they're up to, but they seem entirely dependent on boomer/X tech to survive.

So what I'm saying is, each gen needs to create their own society among themselves. If all us millennials fucked off to Vietnam or Laos, and built something new entirely just for us, boomers would seethe and be helpless. But we can't because my gen is dogshit so we reap what we sow.

It's not even just the AI. From what I've heard from IT people, 1 good programmer or dev is as good as 10 mediocre ones.
There are so many people studying comp science that there are a lot of those "1 good programmers" around and they get hired, companies hunt them down. Makes sense, why pay 10 shitty programmers when you can pay real good salary to just 1 exceptional one.

look, just having a piece of paper doesn't mean you can code.
a bunch of zoomers take some bullshit coding classes at a university and barely pass and think that people who've been coding for fifteen to twenty years will accept their bullshit. Well it won't quite work out that way.
they got into the classes because they saw some tikthot bragging about her bullshit tech job. But it turns out that coding requires real intelligence, focus, and effort.

if you can't code then stop taking the classes and save your time and money.

I am stuck in a secure, but dead end position. I'm a developer focused on developer aquisition. I used to hire around 4-6 junior developers every 6 months on 6 month contracts. I would train them up, and instruct the company which ones to keep.

Now I'm hiring 1-2 every 6 months, the quality of candidates is abysmal. I have the budget to hire more. I have the authority to give out a 50k bonus to good candidates.

Whatever happened during the pandemic, or because of AI has completely destroyed the quality of candidates.

Soon? Yes.

The reason why, is because at most companies developers don't make staffing decisions. There's layers upon layers of managers at most software firms, who haven't touched code either ever, or in a long time. They are all going to conferences and gloating about how 90% of our code is now made by AI.

This _has_ and _will continue_ to reduce positions. There will be very burnt out developers who will lean more and more on AI because their teams are evaporating. Which will lead to lower quality software products, bugs everywhere, core features broken, etc.

In the long term, maybe AI will become good at coding. Who knows?

If AI does learn to code, it's the senior developers like me who are most fucked. For whatever reason senior developers are the least willing and capable of embracing AI tools.

It gives me an aneurysm every time I have to touch an LLM to do anything complex. I'm going to have to become a welder again if it ever gets any good at programming.

The juniors haven't been programming since they were 11, they don't have the weight of decades screaming at them that this thing is retarded.

I actually dread when boomers are gone and when millennials are the majority demographic in political power. I am a millennial and I hate people in my age group. They are sociopaths, emotionally stunted aggressive robots living on a diet of SSRIs, slop, and pornography. They’re evil people in general who wear a mask of empathy and altruism to hide that they’ll take you down at the first chance for updoots. Boomers at least can be based sometimes, and are the last semblance of how things used to be. When boomers are gone every western country will be majority brown, and any memory of the old world will be just that, a memory.

desu AI tools are currently the least useful for senior devs because we rarely need help with the simple stuff, which is what they're good at. I mainly use them when I need to write a Bash script because I still suck at remembering how Bash is written. But I think we'll always be needed because we know what's going on and aided with AI or not we're the most capable of getting things done. If anything it's like giving chainsaws to lumberjacks.

Same. I'm a senior dev with 20y experience and I've learned to be very particular about my code. Style, organization, architectural 'feel'.
I have used LLMs for writing unit tests and a handful of "copy paste" tasks like data objects, validation, and database migrations. But even those have to be tweaked, and I will have to bring them into the "style" of my other code. It winds ip taking almost as long as just copy/pasting them and rewriting.
My junior on the other hand, I don't let him write backend code. He spams out react bullshit with AI and it all works.
I don't care what react looks like since it's all bound to become chaos eventually anyway.

>The alleged culprits? AI programming tools that are eliminating junior positions
this is pure BS. AI is not at the stage of being able to replace a single person.

the real factors:
> during the pandemic, tech companies had a boom and hired like crazy. they're now correcting due to the surplus of labour they hired
> many tech companies are offshoring to India for cheaper labour
> the field is oversaturated with low IQ/incompetent people that are chasing a high salary, but companies obviously don't want to hire these people. they are then featured in articles like this
Anonymous (ID: 67HzF4Gd) United States No.512777030

If most millennials grew up in prosperity like boomers did, of course they'd be just as prosperous as the boomers, have more friendships, values, etc.

Big tech has already been laying off workers and that’s only going to continue

Computer Science has the highest starting salary of all majors and the most people that actually get jobs related to their major. Comp sci graduates usually take longer to find their first job because they hold out for actual programming jobs. I took CS in college for 2 years about 5 years ago. even then the salaries were much less than they were during the hype. Automation hit hard and it only gets worse by the day. Plus all the H1-B jeets. Thats why theyre bringing them in, obviously. Lower salaries. Our federal government is conspiring with big tech to undercut fair wages and put americans out of work by bringing in the immigrant scum. Those immigrants get paid much less than what the market would provide if it had real competition. So between AI and mass import of cheap tech workers, that field is over
