Zelensky is no Mannerheim, however. His priorities appear to be his own survival, both political and physical, and both of these things depend on his ability to keep the money from his foreign backers flowing, which means he needs to keep the manpower flowing regardless of how catastrophic that is for Ukraine's demographic future, because the Europeans do not want the war to end. Furthermore, a large part of Ukraine's political institutions are held hostage by ideologically-motivated men who are well armed, trained, great in number, diametrically opposed to a negotiated settlement, and have a history of threatening presidents who don't do as they wish.
Then you have the Americans, who wish to extricate themselves from a war they've invested heavily into but are currently losing, telling you to negotiate a settlement or else.
It's not an enviable position. What do you do if you are Volodymyr Zelensky?
