It's called "opportunity cost".
He already had tasted the waters back in 2014 when he invaded Crimea, breaking the Budapest memorandum and getting nothing but a slap in the wrist. He figured out that he could just do the same with the rest of Ukraine but unfortunately for him his plan backfired and now is stuck in this shit show.
Long story short, he genuinely believe, and his winged monkeys also convinced him of, that he could take all of the Ukraine in a couple of weeks.

What reputation Russia had before the war? Not much left since soviet days actually, nothing to lose really.
It's you who destroyed your own reputation over fucking Ukraine. You want to say you are at the same place as in 2021? And let alone 2013? Constant decline, because you chose to die on this losing hill. For no real reason too. Purely for ideological delusions and interest of a small democrat and neo-con clique.

because the ukrainian people deposed of a russian puppet in 2013 thus beginning a wave of democratically-decided policies which moved ukraine sharply away from russia and towards europe/the west. it's not simply a matter of territory and resources, the ukrainian and russian people are incredibly interconnected. if the russian people started seeing their neighbors prosper under relations with the west after denying russia then they start asking questions about their own conditions.

putin will cry about "nato" and armchair analysts will talk about warm-water ports. the reality is that a prospering neighbor that were once your brother is the beginning of the end for putin and his piggybanks.

Imagine spouting this kind of nonsense in 2025. This is some plebbit tier propaganda nonsense from 2013-14.
You don't have democracy. Europe doesn't have democracy. And Ukraine today is literally anti-thesis of democracy. And freedom for that matter. Imagine daring to bring this shit up, when men in Ukraine can't fucking leave the house without zogbots hunting for them on the streets. Let alone leaving the country.

Yeah no. EU can support Ukraine without Traitor Trump. EU also has nukes, aircraft carriers, but first and foremost far better soldiers. EU and NATO don't need the US. Just keep in mind when Russia and China attack the US, it's a hard pass on the rescue operation.

Putin is ex-KGB. He's still a communist at heart. In ways he's like Hitler because all he wants to do is reunite what he thinks is the prime Soviet territory. He has been planning this for decades. I believe in his mind he thought he could take Ukraine in a week because Joe is a retard. He didn't count on the blackmail power Zelensky had over Joe because of Hunter. So low and behold the US steps in a long with the EU and fucks Putin's plans stalling the war.

Putin got into his position by being very unremarkable and cunning. He saw an opportunity and he took it. And that's how he was able to take a young democracy and turn it into a dictatorship. Putin sees himself as a conqueror like Peter The Great or Hitler. Putin enjoyed stealing land from Georgia (the country not the US state). He also enjoyed stealing Crimea (a chunk of Ukraine he stole in 2014). And since the poor people of Russia have no democracy and have no real reason to feel pride, the only time they can feel good about themselves is when Putin steals land. So Putin did see approval ratings rise whenever he stole land. The world tried appeasement, and just like in the 30s/40s it bites us in the ass. Putin is just a retarded guy who didn't know when to leave the table.

No, he invaded Ukraine because of a CIA coup to turn their neighbor against them. Like it wasn't even subtle, same formula they've been using for 40 years.
If the same thing happened to Mexico, US would invade and be justified. Russia did nothing wrong.

And now I will write the truth.

Russia has become a vassal country of China. The entire current economy of Russia is supported by trade with China. China supplies low-quality products to Russia because nothing else can be bought in Russia. For example, Chinese cars, which are a meme even in China, in Russia they cost 4 times more than in China (from $25,000 for the most shitty model).

Russia is finished, it's never recovering now. All of its satellites have drifted away by sheer embarrassment. It can only hope to be a big Poland for China to exploit for cheap gas and hookers.

Russia failed so fucking hard with this invasion. They will, just through sheer numbers, eventually capture their objectives - probably.

But we have to use words like "eventually" and "probably" because of how fucking pathetic the whole thing has been.

And then it's the Russian copes. Oh, NATO is supplying them. NATO this. NATO that. Just further evidencing how ineffective Russia would ACTUALLY be if they had to fight NATO, not just a NATO-supplied country.

They're going to rename Pyrrhic victory to Putin victory.

aging government, failing state, desire to centralise control. since the start of ukraine war, russia government passed many emergency measures stripping russian people of pretty much any illusion of rights they had. i think this is because most of russias leadership are old men and will be retiring and dying in the coming decade.

UKR overthrew their corrupt elites. That represents an existential threat to Russian elites. Don't ever think international policy and domestic politics aren't linked.

yeah thats true to. the last thing putin and his clique would want is for ukraine to trade with other countries etc. its similar to how putin says that estonia is existential threat to russia, because fact estonia is superior nation, better quality life, technology, etc than ru makes it very hard for russian government to keep selling the myths they have. no surprise so many russian people leave year after year.
