The sick days we get each year don't roll over and we don't get paid for them if we don't use them (they used to pay us but this changed a while back). I used to use them for random shit or if I just didn't want to go but I've gotten promoted and my job is a bit more important now, so I only use them if I actually get sick. That being said, if I have any left over near the end of the year I preschedule them like vacation days and use the rest that way. There's literally no reason not to use them.

See, good management in the 21st century is basically underscheduling. Your boss doesn't want you to schedule people, because that costs him money. On top of that, you gotta cut a bit more to go above and beyond. You also can't schedule anyone who is gonna want a raise for their hard work, so you gotta fill up the roster with people who will sit around and complain if they show up. If anyone complains about work not getting done, say you can't hire any good people because no one wants to work.

Another useful strat is to schedule the hard workers 3 shifts in a row and then make them stay late to unload the truck. This will hopefully cause them to quit. They stress everyone out anyway.

Also, make sure to release the schedule at 2 am right before people would need to come in.

Sorry for the late response. Back then I could not afford to miss or call off sick, we did not have designated sick days pre hr days. It was, you better be bleeding, on fire or dead or you're fired. I pushed through and that endurance made me a stronger person, I do not regret a moment of it. I also worked in the back warehouse with gloves and a mask in hot conditions, no AC back then! My point is that since then I have not taken a single personal or sick day unless it was pre approved and someone else was happy to cover it. That was back when calling off sick meant you got fired where I worked, and there was no other grocery store that would hire you because it was a small town. I built my experience, applied my work ethic and eventually landed a career without a degree. These days everything needs college, but there are trades out there who look out for talent and work ethic. Going to work sick is unacceptable. It puts all of your coworkers at risk of becoming sick themselves, destroying their productivity. Moreover, working sick may cause you to do a job incorrectly in the same way as if you had shown up to work drunk. A boss who cares about productivity will consider sick days to be mandatory, and not a "if you feel like it" thing.
