The year 2000, when George W Bush won in Florida instead of Al Gore.
Think about it: Gore would have had a complete different response to 9/11. America doesn't invest itself in two pointless wars in the middle east for decades. America never loses its shit and goes down a rabbit hole of expanding presidential power to fight ever more broad definitions of "terrorism", which is where the gulf between the Republicans and the Democrats really started widening and they stopped talking to each other. American culture doesn't become obsessed with dark, cynical "realism" for over a decade. The Tea Party never gets a foothold in american politics, and does not start the inexorable march of dragging American politics further and further to the right.
Gore takes climate change seriously, so we have a real chance of getting ahead of global warming before its too late and avoiding the worst of the climate crises.
Because we don't have 8 years of Bush, we don't have the pendulum swing that gave us Obama. As a result, America doesn't have its first black president, but that also means that the GOP doesn't go *buttfuck insane* and cliff-dive over the edge into frothing rage and racism for 8 years.
The enshittification of American politics all traces back to the 2000 election and the 9/11 that followed it.
