So many shills in this thread. The real answer: Röhm was a useful but stupid man. He was a military man who saw anyone not in the military as inferior, thought every problem could be solved by revolting more, and he never attempted diplomacy with anyone, the very reason he became useful was because he was good at handling street fights.

Röhm made an enemy of everyone with his constant calls to revolution, and everyone across the board wanted him gone, despite everyone loving Hitler, his SA were despised. As Röhm was becoming a real issue, Hindenburg and Papen gave Hitler an ultimatum, either he took care of the issue quickly, or the military would, causing vastly more deaths and having Hitler lose a lot of his political power.

Röhm was dead either way, Hitler simply took the logical move despite not wanting to do so, having to be fed lies by Himmler and Goering, and he still wanted to keep him alive but was forced to relent in the end by his advisors.
