Communism caused 40 years of economic mismanagement left eastern europe economically fucked. Most of eastern europe was poor as shit even before, but communism made it worse.
After the fall of communism, many large and important companies were given to former high ranking party members who became the new elite. Many of those companies were "tunneled out" meaning that their new owners extracted as much money from those companies as possible bankrupting them in the process.
The companies that weren't tunneled out were usually sold off to western investors. These comapnies often became manufacturing hubs for western corpos who use us as a source of cheap labour. This is a pretty big problem in czechia. Our whole economy is focused on export to germany and most of the export companies are owned by german corporations. Those corporations plan strategies/policies and make decisions and ofc they won't raise our wages, cheap labour is the reason they invested here in the first place. The czech (foreign owned) export companies have little decision making power making us utterly economically dependent on germany.
There are other problems of course. But this is imo one of the largest problems which keeps us relatively poor compared to western europe

Yeah I mainly described the situation in Czechia in my post. Czechoslovakia was already very industrialised before communism (mainly Czechia, Slovakia and the Rus were still agrarian). In our case communism slowed innovation and caused other problems which made a big part of our industry unable to compete with the rest of the world once we opened up our economy. Foreign investment was neccesery to avoid total economic stagnation. But I think that our policy makers focused too much on export of cheap parts with little added value to germany and failed create an environment for innovation and entrepreneurship.
Škoda is indeed a good example of the benefits of foreign investment. Škoda even pays pretty good money. Even the assembly line workers there get an above-median wage and a fuckton of benefits.
