British soldiers are among the world's finest. Training, equipment and junior leadership is excellent. The quality of their moral and fighting spirit is excellent.
It at the upper levels of command they fail. From mid level all the way up to senior commanders, then up to their political leadership, the Brits suffer from a degree of incompetence approaching that of Indian tier. I dont know what causes this, perhaps its a remains of their class system, the way they run senior officer training, their Imperial legacy, whatever.
A good case study of this is the Falklands war. A lot of good men lost their lives because their senior leadership were a pack of arrogant useless pricks.

Our Marines don't have the same combat role as the USMC; the Royal Marine Corps are a special forces unit who excel in covert deployment and underhanded bastardry.

The USMC is a mechanized warfare formation who use combined arms tactics for direct combat.

This sort of thing is more than likely the equivalent of a friendly pen-testing exercise.
