It has been a long time, but meh. Not bad, but I doubt I would have read it if it weren't on the syllabus. That era of dystopian fiction took itself too seriously.

the industrial revolution created the proletariate and middle class. both groups were loyal to the elites so long as the system and liberal democracy worked, particularly midclass.
these two groups are no longer needed by the system and they are figuring it out, their loyalty is in question and the only card the elites have to play is to massively increase repression, tap a sign, start a war, anything to decrease the rising strains, and through this they hope to avoid 1789.

Because "someone" managed to culturally normalize it through Women, and their anger towards men over past laws where Women were censored and unable to vote or work. By giving them SOME freedom, they immediately used that to find ways to censor men, and now that it's gained traction under masochistic nationalism (self-hatred of your own country's citizen) the government can also get away with getting power under a fake guise of "protecting and doing the righteous thing."

When people started cheering for criminal punishment against perverted men, the whole premise of democratic freedom died, because the whole origin of the modern "free country" society we've lived in started with de-banning pornography and people becoming openly hedonistic.
