Population ebbs and flows. Up and down since the beginning of time. We just exited the largest increase in human population in recorded history. The antibiotics boom. Now it is going down. Why? The merchant class got too greedy. Japan has never recovered from the 90s crash, so they are ahead of us on this. There isn't much of one left from what I hear. Which is one of the reasons their population is taking a nosedive. Most of the population lives in cities where space is a premium, working as office drones 16 hours a day. Is there any wonder they aren't reproducing in droves? This is an issue across East Asia. They tend to have stereotypes about rural people, and that is where population growth comes from. Cities don't replace demographics.

In a vacuum like Japan, a mostly ethnically and culturally homogeneous island nation with VERY limited immigration, population decline is ok as long as it doesn't get near doomsday levels.
The problem will arise if they start to push for mass immigration, disenfranchise the native population even more, and over time simply replace them altogether.

I remember when my countries population was 100M lower and it was so much comfier. All of the houses were affordable, the jobs paid well.
