I was talking to a friend about fluoride and we're both conspiracy theory heads, and I realized I never really figured out what was so bad about it. I just always avoided it because my mom always told me to when I was a kid.

What's the real problem with fluoride though, in your opinion? Is there a crazy conspiracy about why its in all the products or is it just another FDA failure?

Fluoride will lower your IQ if consumed in large quantities, but the amount in drinking water is minuscule. Fluoride obviously does help prevent cavities - it’s not up for debate. Countless studies have been done on this and you can even observe what happens when cities ban fluoride from their water supply (children reliably get many more cavities). With that said I wouldn’t recommend drinking fluoridated mouthwash or swallowing fluoridated toothpaste. It does have negative neurological effects at certain doses.

The studies they've used to justify its use everywhere are, like most "science" these days, flawed.
However, the entirety of fluoride's beneficial usage is TOPICAL, which means putting it in drinking water is the same as putting sunblock in drinking water. Sure, you would get some benefit with skin exposure, but detrimental to ingest it.

This thread is going to get everything incorrect, because most of the people here didn't pay attention in high school chemistry. Flouride is mainly useful as a topical, and does help prevent your teeth from turning into shit like what happened to Boogie, even if you have a terrible diet. It is less useful and very slightly detrimental, over decades of time, when ingested.

However, anyone capable of doing a fairly basic soil sampling of their water table, should they live off the water grid and on property that has an aquifer/well, will find that they drink far more Flouride than the people in the city. By far more, I mean by at least a magnitude of ten, if not a hundred times more than city dwellers. The difference is that Flouride found in well water has been run through multiple filters, such as the top plant layer, had pieces picked apart by insects and microbes in the dirt, and gone through natural soil, loam, sand, and clay filtering. By that point, you're dealing with Flouride in a form that is far more readily consumable and synthesizable (able to be used) by humans. If the body can't use it, then it's far easier to be packed up into waste.

Flouride in the water grid is commercially made and comes with tons of other bullshit. Most of it is fed through piping systems that are poorly maintained. Despite what water treatment plants say, the vats don't get maintained well enough and flocculate the bullshit out enough. Additionally, tons of cities simply keep reusing all the same water. That's why cities that aren't overly populated and have their own actual reservoirs, like in New England but not Boston, fill a mid gap where not as much Flouride needs to be used.

The easy test is tasting water. If it tastes shitty, like in Texas or Florida, it needs more filtering. If it's palatable like in Pittsfield or Danbury, it's fine out of the tap. The best water is from an aquifer.

At best fluoride is beneficial as a topical treatment for teeth. There are no benefits to ingesting fluoride. There are no benefits for cooking with fluoride. There are none for bathing in fluoride. There are no mechanisms in place to monitor the dosages of fluoride that people are exposed to.

Brita states their pitcher and tap filters don't remove tetrachloroethylene. Pur says their gravity filters do (but not their tap filters). I think if you aren't getting frustrated at the time it takes to filter your water, then it's probably not filtering well enough.
An under-sink system is the way to go. Most companies publish data sheets for their products' effectiveness.
