I think they were classified as such in the pictures I saw, which were taken from early 1900 books about races. There seems to be a connection between people sporting a RH- blood type (notably the Irish, the Welsh, the Berbers, the Basques) and the indigenous western Mediterranean populations, which were later diluted by Indo-Europeans or neolithic farmers, except for these islands or mountains
