The spread of the Germanics came from Sweden and Denmark primarily, and even in the Nordic bronze age there were Slavic settlers that adopted Germanic culture. Prior to the current era, central Europe was mostly populated by Celtic/Italic speakers (La Tene and Hallstatt Celts), they then later adopted Germanic.

In general the Celts, Germanics, Balts, and Slavs look mostly the same. They are the northern IE's.

Southern and central Germans are mostly La Tene Celt (the northern Celts AKA subnordic or Alpinid). Northern Germans are mostly Scandinavian Germanic and look closer to Balts, Scandis, Anglo-Celts (Germanic-Celt), and west Russians (the other northerns). Genetically a Swiss person is almost identical to an English person (northern Celto-Germanic), and they even look like Austrians (Celto-Slavic).

All of northern Europe from the British isles to Russia has a male average height of 180cm (or taller) and a female average height of roughly 167cm.
