The thing about accusing randos on the internet of being fake, is nothing you say will change if they are or not.

And while you're right about they don't have to be actively attacking you to be considered a non-combatant this is war, not law enforcement. Most of the rules err on the side of "you can shoot people". Ambushes were you shoot people in their sleep for example are fine.

But a guy with no kit crawling on the ground begging not to be killed has effectively taken himself off the field.

Regarding the scenario you provided, it's not the other side's job to ascertain your combat capabilities, a man obscured under a wrecked vehicle could still hold a weapon and take someone out with him. Only if explicit signals of surrender were given and strong evidence of disarmament is a soldier considered "surrendered".

Why don't you torture POWs? Because it's a subhuman way of conducting warfare. An enemy that's willing to surrender because of the perceived treatment they would get is easier to root out as they won't fight to the death. Likewise it promotes the enemy in sparing your troops rather than outright killing them. If your intention is fighting to the last man in a death war then it's a great way of "bolstering" your soldiers morale into not surrendering like the Japanese in WW2 who believed they would've been tortured by Americans and would rather jump off cliffs than give themselves up willingly.
