If Zelensky was smart he would agree to the Trump-Putin peace deal to evacuate Donetsk oblast because at the current rate of advance of over 500 km2 per month, Ukraine will be pushed out of the remaining 6500 km2 they control in the oblast in less than a year.

How does this whole front line even work at the local level? Are there just individual soldiers on either side in random fields sitting around all day in that one area and reporting where they are or does it have to correspond to actual places Russians are verified as being in with no opposition?

These maps are quite literally a visual projection. Some areas really are static like lines, such as in Kherson where neither side really goes across the river. In Pokrovsk it's been much more flexible, there were some Russian force in the center of the city and some mappers chose to color parts red, but they clearly haven't taken the city and it's uncertain how much it's being assaulted building to building. Bahkmut and Avdivka really were contested apartment complex to apartment complex, so mapping/painting made more sense.
